German, circa 1820s. A Fine German Stobwasser lacquered papier maché snuff box painted with a historical portrait of George Washington, the interior lid with title in red and ‘6273,’ the interior base marked in red ‘Stobwasser’s Fabrik Ine Braunschweig’ and ‘6273’. In original presentation red and green box, inscribed on the base 'Captain John Lared to Issac Lowry, June 22, 1833". Diameter 3.75". Johann Heinrich Stobwasser (1740-1829) founded the Stobwasser factory in 1763 which became a leading exponent in the art of hand painting snuff box lids. Only the more important pieces bore a signature and number.
Light craquelure or alligatoring to painted figure on top of snuff box commensurate with age. Paint with no signs of lifting. Minor light wear to paint, lacquer and gilt text within. Minute small chips scattered throughout edges on interior and exterior of box--not particularly distracting. No signs of cracks or significant losses. Under black light examination, snuff box with greenish hue from older varnish coat--little to no signs of in-painting or retouches. Red box with wear commensurate with age, particularly on edges.
