Spode (England, 1770- ), circa 1883. A blue and white transfer decorated handled porcelain biscuit jar in the shape of a purse having a gilt metal handle and a floral engraved metal hinged lid to each side, the whole decorated with assorted blue foliage on white ground. Indistinguishable hallmarks to the metal lid. English registry mark to the underside indicating production October 25, 1883. Approximate height 8.8" (top of handle), width 7.75", depth 5.5".
Oxidation to metal throughout commensurate with age. Loss sustained at upper left corner of handle (clean breaks). Additional loss sustained on one bracket (bracket attaching metal handle to body), with one screw later replaced. One bracket with untreated fracture on metal tip. One screw with later adhesive reinforcement. Porcelain cracked under one bracket, repaired with metal suture staple with chipped white painted finish. Significant loss to gilt accents throughout. No other signs of overt damage, loss or repair.
