Spanish School, early 20th century. "La Maja de la Mantilla Negra (Woman in A Black Mantilla)", oil on canvas laid down on board, signed lower right "J. Barreira". Painting depicts a young Andalucian woman with porcelain skin and large brown eyes, set in half bust view with a black lace veil draped over a red hat, wearing a low v-necked green dress with black lace overlay, and holding a painted fan in her right hand. Inscribed on verso "La Maja De La Mantilla Negra, J. Barreira, Ano 1924, Valencia, Spain". Framed behind glass 33.25" x 25.5", unframed 26.75" x 18.75.
Painting with no signs of rips or tears. Under black light examination, in-painting to face and upper portion of neck (color difference visible in images)--appears that the retouching was done to make woman's face pinker in hue. Scattered retouches to lace. Small hole on side of frame in ebonized area. No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Total weight in frame approximately 18-20 lbs.
