- Lot Description
Attributed to Dave Drake at Lewis Miles Stony Bluff Pottery (Edgefield, South Carolina), circa 1840-1860. A nicely turned stoneware jar with lug handles in close proximity to lip, on ovoid body. Upper body with rich alkaline glaze and exhibiting "U" inscribed mark along with side punctuation style marks. Approximate height 14.37". Note: Also known by the names Dave the Slave and Dave the Potter, David Drake is recognized as the first slave potter to inscribe his name on a work, a notable attribute in a time when most slaves were illiterate and anonymous. Provenance: From the Estate of Liz Howell Bloodworth, Atlanta, Georgia.
Condition
Stable crack (see image #4 and #7) starts at rim (interior and exterior) with evidence of old glue repair or filled (glue/fill observed only under black light and not visible to naked eye). Glaze and firing pops. Spider webbing present. Glaze has crawling in scattered places on the jar occurring during the firing. Chips to underside base commensurate with age and contact to surface.
