- Lot Description
American, likely New York, circa 1810. An exceptional Sheraton mahogany, pine secondary, pedestal-end sideboard having a raised scalloped backsplash with two deck drawers to each end over a pull out side and five drawers above bowed simulated tambour central cupboard door, flanked by a bottle drawer on each side and two long platter drawers, the whole raised on turned tapered and reed legs terminating in brass caps on casters. Each drawer beaded with replaced hardware, apparently originally fitted with lion mask pulls. Approximate height 57.75", width 73", depth 20.75". Note: A nearly identical sideboard is in the collection at Boscobel, Garrison NY Hudson Valley mansion. That collection was assembled in the late 1970s by Berry Tracy, who was then Curator-in-Charge of American Decorative Arts in the American Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art ( see Plate 40 in 'Federal Furniture and Decorative Arts at Boscobel' by Berry B. Tracy, publisher Harry Abrams, 1981). The same form of sideboard appeared on the cover of the June 1810 Revised Pricebook for Manufacturing Cabinet and Chair Work. Provenance: The Steven Williams House, Savannah, Georgia whereby acquired by a Private Collection in Atlanta, Georgia.
