French, ca. 1825. Set of 4 mahogany French Empire chairs with ormolu mounts in the classical Empire style, each comprising a crest rail with mounts depicting many motifs from classical mythology including griffins, garlands, wreaths, eagles, paterae and acanthus scrolls, the stiles headed by ormolu masks, the coved splat with mount depicting a muse reading a scroll, likely Clio, the half round seat upholstered in silk fabric with Napoleonic bee motif, the seat rail decorated with central patera flanked by vines, the knee blocks with bronze Cupid mounts, on four sabre legs. Approximate height 31.5", width 19", depth 15", seat to floor 16.5".
Chairs are in good condition overall with all bronzes intact. Three chairs have diagonal split in crest. One chair exhibits a split at left edge of crest, slight veneer loss to arms. Backs and fronts of seat backs exhibit slight lifting of veneers. Seat rails with very slight chips and abrasions throughout legs commensurate with age and use.
