Circle of Alexander Roux (American (New York (1813-1886)), circa 1870s-1880s. A pair of complementing but unmatched stained walnut Jacobean Revival style armchairs, each with dragon crests, barley twist turned stiles, long rectangular seats with pierced acanthus leaf scrolled carving, and padded arms, the backs, arms, and seats upholstered in conforming diamond pattern fabric comprising muted green and brown diamonds on rust colored ground with brass nailhead trim, raised on barley twist turned stretches and block and baluster turned legs, the front legs on casters, one chair comprising a crest with opposing rampant dragons centered by a flourishing foliate stalk, the hand rests comprising curved winged gryphon busts terminating in acanthus scrolls, the other chair with recumbent dragon crest centered by a relief carved cabochon surmounted by a scroll pediment, the handrests comprising scrolled acanthus leaves terminating in carved bulbous dog faces. Approximate height (tallest chair) 53", width 26.5", depth 26", seat to floor 17.5".
