Second Pattern Confederate National Flag, possibly issued to the Confederate States Navy, with 13 hand-sewn, cotton stars configured in the shape of a diagonal cross, atop a blue wool bunting or tammy on a red ground. The stars are stitched around the outer edges which is consistent with the Civil War-period technique. The white bunting is single-ply with cotton hoist and jute rope, fairly typical of Confederate States Navy. Height 52", width 106". Provenance: According to consignor, the flag was purchased years ago from Rob White (founder of Robb Report).
Flag with frayed edges and scattered holes throughout; light, scattered stains throughout flag; with some areas of separation, including areas where stitching occurred; hoist has separated from bottom left edge of blue saltire; one star is partially ripped along back side (bottom left corner), and some stars are lightly stained.
