Ruth Appeldoorn Mead (American (Illinois/ Massachusetts), 1894-1994), "Beach Town", watercolor on paper laid down on matboard, signed lower right in pencil. Quaint beach town scene depicting rows of grey houses lining the boardwalk, white seagull perched on top of house in foreground, two male figures standing beside stack of barrels, power lines rising above the homes with the ocean in distance. Framed approximately 20.25" x 25.25". Unframed approximately 15" x 18". Note: Ruth Appledoorn Mead received her early formal training in art at the University of Michigan, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Minneapolis School of Design, earning a master's degree in art from the University of Chicago. Learning first from her father, who was an artist, she studied in the 1940s and 1950s with Hans Hoffman and Joseph Albers. Later in life she taught at the McHenry public schools for thirty years. She has been recognized as a talented and serious artist, respected as a longtime art teacher in the northwest suburbs and the key figure behind the noted Old Sculpin Art Gallery in Edgar town, Massachusetts, on Martha's Vineyard.Prior to bidding, please consult the additional photos provided and ask all pertinent questions (i.e. condition, size, etc.).
