Note: Ruth Appledoorn Mead received her early formal training in art at the University of Michigan, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Minneapolis School of Design, earning a master's degree in art from the University of Chicago. Learning first from her father, who was an artist, she studied in the 1940s and 1950s with Hans Hoffman and Joseph Albers. Later in life she taught at the McHenry public schools for thirty years. She has been recognized as a talented and serious artist, respected as a longtime art teacher in the northwest suburbs and the key figure behind the noted Old Sculpin Art Gallery in Edgar town, Massachusetts, on Martha's Vineyard.
