Roman Chatov (American (Georgia), 1900-1987). "Birth of Aphrodite", acrylic on masonite, signed lower right. Painting composed from thin washes of color depicting the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Roman: Venus) floating in a large clam shell toward shore, the figure wearing tattered blue draped gown exposing her long neck and decolletage with her face turned down to left peering toward the point of her trident grasped in both hands to front of her body, the figure flanked to all sides by large and small seagulls in flight before a dark sky. Framed approximately 40" x 34.25", unframed approximately 30" x 24".
Examined under black light. Overall in excellent condition. Two small abrasions to paint surface, one to left of figure's head and one on figure's left shoulder, neither is distracting. Paint layer stable. Evidence of older varnish layer. No other apparent abrasions or punctures.
