Roman Chatov (American (Georgia), 1900-1987). "Abstract Figure with Flowers" - 1968, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Cubist style painting depicting a figure at center with triangular white head and neck wearing a court jester outfit with blue and black body over orange sleeves, the figure holding a bouquet of flowers in hand with blossoms to left and stems to right as he walks toward the viewer, the background a cluster of jagged color fields in tones of gray and black. Framed approximately 36.75" x 24.75", unframed approximately 36" x 24".
Examined under blacklight. Oxidation to verso of canvas and structure commensurate with age. Minor in painting - four small areas to chest area in blue field, two small areas above head at upper right of composition, and two at center right near edge of composition. Sweeping area of craquelure from lower left of figure arcing up over right arm, similar craquelure to other areas apparent when viewing verso of work - these all likely due to use of a particular type of paint or material on those sections. Very small area of paint loss near figure's hip. None of the craquelure, loss, or inpaintings are distracting. Painting would benefit from professional cleaning. Paint layer stable. Painting is not relined.
