Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971), "Beowulf: Genealogical Tree" - 1931, edition of 150, lithograph on wove paper, pencil signed lower right margin. Print depicting a scene from the Old English epic poem Beowulf depicting two strongly modeled lovers resting beneath three barren and broken trees, one with a branch extending over the figures' heads and bearing a fruitful grapevine, the scene set in a desloate landscape in grayscale. Accompanied with copy of catalog page from Christie's sale at which the print was purchased, as well as copies of information on the artist and this particular work. Framed approximately 21.875" x 17.875". Image size approximately 12.625" x 10". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia. Note: acquired from Christie's New York as part of lot 27 on September 19, 1992.
Light evening toning to sheet. Minor evidence of mat burn. Back with two pieces of older hinging tape, joined to mat board with two newer pieces of hinging tape at top. Upper center above plate with abrasion likely from earlier adhesive. Scattered minor dirt marks on margins from handling-- not particularly noticeable or distracting. No holes, rips, tears, foxing or water damage.
