Robert Payton Reid (United Kingdom, 1859-1945). "After the Battle", oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "R Payton Reid 1895". Painting depicts several male figures engaged in an intense battle scene in a meadow backed by a cliff wall, with a single figure centering the composition with a drawn sword in right hand and cape over left arm having just struck a figure to the right. Hang tag on verso of stretcher from Sotheby's as well as several stickers on stretcher indicating auction date and internal memos. Framed 59.25" x 49", unframed 50" x 40". Provenance: Sotheby's, Hopetoun House in Edinburgh, Scotland, Scottish Pictures Auction on April 19, 1999, lot # 28. Purchased at Sotheby's by current owner. Copy of page in auction catalog available upon request.
Craquelure throughout commensurate with age, however, paint layer appears to be stable. Under black light examination, scattered retouches throughout—most significant in upper left corner in background and on chest plate of wounded man on right side—not interfering with face or detailed areas. Painting on original canvas and not relined. Frame later and not original to work.
