English, late 18th/early 19th century. A fine Regency tortoise shell and silver piping tea caddy, the serpentine shaped hinged lid centered with silver shaped cartouche (blank) opening to interior fitted with two tortoise shell covered lids, the conforming serpentine body with shaped silver escutcheon over a shaped base on bun feet. Approximate height 5", base width 8", base depth 5.25".
Scattered small repairs with patches to wavy skirt on front (see images #6, #7).Scattered losses to corners and edges with traces of old glue residue observed under ultraviolet light. Backside of caddy with repair with loss under hinge approximately 2.75" in length (see image #2). Right back upper corner above hinge with loss. Left side with circular raised area possibly a patch repair (see image #1). Same side with veneer slightly lifting. Interior lid with wear to velvet lining. Left hinge is broken (see image #8). Remnants of foil lining to interior compartments (see image #5). Two bun feet do not match the other two (see image #9).
