English, late 19th century. Rare Regency style chinoiserie decorated partner's desk, red lacquered, parcel gilt and polychrome decorated with square top inset gilt embossed leather writing surface bordered by diaper pattern, raised figures fishing and hunting, rockwork, pavilions, flowering trees and birds, within a simulated bamboo frame over a conforming case, both sides with central frieze drawer over a kneehole flanked by two banks of four graduated drawers, all within faux bamboo borders and chinoiserie raised decoration with figures, zoomorphic beasts, architecture, birds and insects in scenic landscapes. Both sides of desk with four recessed panels similarly decorated in larger scale, raised on bracket feet. Height 31.5", width 68.25", depth 62.75". Provenance: Originally purchased by Arnie Geller (Manager of Atlanta Rhythm Section) December 1978 from Frank Garrett Imports, Ltd, 2300 Peachtree Road, N.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30309.
Condition
Structurally sound. Scattered stains, probably moisture rings to the leather top (see image #8). Small bamboo loss. Scattered scratches, cracks and chips with minor paint loss commensurate with age and usage (see image #7 and #9), Most locks have been replaced with Hobbs & Co London Lever, one lock has a royal cypher with 4 lever patent cylinder, one other appears to be Bramah and one is stamped 'hand made'. No key present.
