French, 19th century. Very rare hand colored double elephant copperplate engraving from Napoleon Bonaparte's first edition of "Description de l’Égypte". Work of Plate 51 "Thebes, Karnak" with image depicting a "Elevation Perspective de la Porte de Sud (Perspective Elevation of the Southern Door)" with small figures walking in procession, many holding fans dwarfed by the significant and striking Egyptian architecture found in the Karnak South Temple Doorway flanked by rows of ram headed sphnixes. Framed approximately 49" x 40.75". Sight size approximately 37.5" x 29.25". Note: The "Description de l'Egypte" included around 837 engravings which served as the first comprehensive description of ancient and modern Egypt. The large project 23 volume tome included contributions by 167 scholarly members of the Institut de l'E´gypte established by Napoleon to accompany his expedition to Egypt in 1798-1801. After the expedition and seeing the success of Denon's 'Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du general Bonaparte' (1802), Napoleon ordered the Imperial Press to produce a publication that would serve as a visual record of the Egyptian expedition's findings. At first, the large undertaking was published in smaller installments over a twenty year period (1809-1829). Around 400 skilled copper engravers worked on the project during that twenty year span. While the thorough tome was produced in smaller formats and elephant folios, the double elephant folios remain the most rare and desirable. Many of these remain in the hands of noted rare book collections such as The National Library of Scotland and The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University in New Haven, CT.
