Attributed to Richard Parkes Bonington (British, 1801-1828). "Seascape, Off the Dover Coast", oil on wood panel, apparently unsigned but indistinguishably inscribed to verso of panel on paper label. Seascape painting depicting a small rowboat at left, possibly capsized beside two red buoys, with several sailboats at center and right along the low horizon line below clouded and gray stormy skies that exhibit one cloud break near center through which can be seen deep blue sky, the gray sea covered with white caps, and many seagulls aloft throughout scene. Three period label fragments to verso of panel. Framed approximately 13.25" x 18", unframed approximately 5.125" x 10.125".
Work examined out of the frame and under a black light. Wear to edges from rubbing on frame with minor losses and darkening. Little to no signs of in-painting under blacklight examination. Wood loss to upper right corner--not visible in frame. Scratches and oxidation to board on verso commensurate with age. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
