Paul Mount (English, 1922 - 2009), "The Union", bronze sculpture, apparently unsigned. Abstracted figural sculpture depicting two figures embracing, with arms and legs conjoined to form a single entity, with two ovoidal piercings between embracing legs and arms; polished bronze with overall patination; with attached black stone base. Approximate height with base 5.125", width 8.25", depth 4". Provenance: John Whibley Gallery Ltd., London, whereby acquired by the Estate of Joseph Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia on 2/26/69. Purchase receipt available upon request. Note: Mount, like his contemporaries and compatriots in the St. Ives School--Barabra Hepworth (English, 1903-1975), Denis Mitchell (English, 1912-1993) and John Milne (English, 1931-1978)--conceived of his work in relationship to the surrounding landscape.
Handling wear to protruding elements. Very minor scattered pitting, not distracting. Mild verdigris oxidation to interior surface. Slate plinth base with wear to edges commensurate with age and material, not distracting. Underside of base with scattered abrasions, felt and adhesive remnants commensurate with age and use.
