French, 18th C. Palatial French walnut marriage armoire from Arles or possibly Nimes, France, with arched crest above a carved floral basket adorned with high relief carved doves surrounded by an oak leaf wreath, which symbolizes fidelity, over the pair of molded and fielded paneled doors, centered with a panel ornamentation representing the French flambeau and torch for eternity along with a basket filled with foliage and nuts symbolizing prosperity and enclosing an interior now retro-fitted for a flat screen television, resting on the pierced apron centered with fruit filled urn and pierced scrolling acanthus raised on squat cabriole legs terminating in scrolled toes. Height 107" width 60", depth 23.5", the interior with a depth 21.5". Provenance: Purchased from Jacqueline Adams Antiques Interiors, 2300 Peachtree Road, N.W., Suite B100, Atlanta, Georgia on 6/9/2000 in the amount of $43,500. Original receipt to accompany purchase if desired.
Armoire is structurally sound. Doors close evenly. Three drawers slide easily. There are separation cracks to the interior of the drawers. Damage to left side middle panel which has been repaired (see image 9). There are two vertical cracks/splits to the bottom panel of same side. Prior worm wood damage. There is slight lifting and gapping at cornice. There is a vertical crack on the right side on bottom panel. The locking mechanism has been removed from interior door. There is races of old glue residue in front molding. There is a break to the molding at bottom center of apron (see image 5). There is also a repair to the apron.
