Pair of William Aiken Walker (American/ South Carolina/ Maryland, 1838-1921) figural paintings comprising of "Male Sharecropper", oil on wood panel, signed lower left "WA Walker" and ""Female Cotton Picker", oil on wood panel, signed lower left "WA Walker". One painting depicts a single African American male with grey beard standing in front of a cotton field wearing a tattered coat, pants, and hat with an overflowing woven basket full of picked cotton to his side. The other painting depicts a single African American woman standing in front of a field of cotton wearing a tan head wrap and black coat with wide red collar over long tan skirt, holding a handful of picked cotton in her right hand and standing behind a large woven basket of picked cotton. Each framed 13.25" x 9.25", unframed 8.5" x 4.75". Provenance: According to the consignor, this pair of fine paintings descended through the Ford Family of South Carolina whereby acquired by present owner in Atlanta, Georgia. Note: These paintings have been authenticated and will be featured in Mr. John Fowler's forthcoming catalog raisonne on the artist, William Aiken Walker. The frames appear to be original to the works.
Both paintings in excellent condition with minor retouches not readily visible (seen under black light examination). Boards in excellent condition with no splitting. Frames appear to be original.
