Manner of Edme Samson (French, 1845 - 1969), early 20th century. Pair of porcelain covered jars or vases, each modeled with a raptorial bird finial to the dome shaped lid, the ovoid body with vertical ribs and hand painted colorful floral bouquets at the shoulder, the body with two larger colorful bouquets centering two ribbon-tied gilded wreaths in relief enclosing battle scenes on horseback and on verso a hunting scene with figures, dogs and horses, all in eighteenth-century dress; the base of each with molded gilt heightened acanthus on turned base. Neither apparently marked. Approximate height 12.62".
One lidded jar in very good condition with wear to gilt elements and light wear to bottom commensurate with age and shelf use. The other lidded jar with large curved repair on body of vase with retouches to glaze and painted elements, lid with multiple breaks and repairs throughout including to bird finial, wear to gilt throughout, scattered darkened speckles throughout body on top of glaze (may clean up with light professional cleaning), small glazing imperfection on foot, light wear to bottom commensurate with age and shelf use. Each examined under black light. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
