Italian, 19th century. A matched pair of finely carved Rosso or Rosa Verona marble carved lions on bases, each opposing lion realistically carved in recumbent position with mouth open in full snarl, full mane and large paws overhanging the plinth. Lions further mounted on conforming and matching marble rectangular plinth bases. Approximate height 49", width 42.75", depth 14.5".
Pair of lions disassemble into four pieces (two lions & two bases). Each lion with dark spotting to body & mane, predominantly on top. One lion with four large chunks missing on mane. Numerous scattered chips & losses. Scattered surface abrasions. Scattered cracking to marble on lions. Bases with larger chips to plinth. Large repair on one base to lower right corner. Large chunks of marble missing to back on one pedestal. Also missing chunks to vulnerable corners of pedestals. Two long diagonal cracks with infill repairs to other pedestal. Each statue approximately over 1500 pounds.
