Chinese, 20th century. A pair of large and impressively hand painted baluster form porcelain vases with opposing or mirrored decoration depicting a steamship traveling down a waterway with mountains to one bank and various structures to opposite bank, the back of each vase with many sailboats on the water set before a distant village at the mountain's base, the incurvate neck of each vase with gilt endless knot handles and several lines or black calligraphic marks. Unmarked. Approximate height 23", diameter 10".
Wear to gilt on handles. Wear to bottom with additional nicks and chips. Each vase with thin radiating hairline cracks on bottom--appear to be stable. Exterior with a few scattered glazing imperfections. Under black light examination, no signs of further damage, loss or repair.
