Chinese, 20th century. Pair of large sculptural seated foo or fu dogs (guardian lions) on stands with exterior covered in parcel gilt, carved and ornamented ivory or bone veneered tiles or panels. Foo dogs with carved curled hair accented in black and gold , carved scrolled black eyebrows, above inset tiger's eye stone eyes, flared nostrils on rounded noses above open mouth with exposed teeth. Each foo dog (shi) with scrolled foliate carved collar or band accented with small multicolored round cabochons, large tassels on sides, and a guardian lion's head with drop ring at center supporting carved bell with similar ornamentation. Fu dogs representing the standard yin and yang philosophy with female and male guardian lions--the female with cub under paw and the male with ball. Each raised on square bases with triangular drop pendants and paneling engraved and enhanced in black with dragon, lappet, floral, and archaic motif. Bases further supported on carved wooden plinth with gadrooned border. Overall (including wooden stand) approximate height 44.75", width 25", depth 27".
