Italian, 19th century. Matched pair of hand painted bombe form bedside commodes, each having a simulated marble serpentine molded top over a conforming case with two drawers, the whole decorated in cream ground and painted with European villages and landscape scenes in Delft blue palette. Approximate height 30.75", width 25.4", depth 15".
Both commodes are structurally sound. Both commode tops have some chips with losses of painted finish. Both tops have slight depression running horizontally center. One top with horizontal crack, left side. Drawers on both commodes are missing the escutcheons. Locks are probably not original to piece with recent screws (see image #9). One commode bottom drawer locking mechanism loose and missing three screws. There are paint splatters to interior drawers. Traces of glue residue at joints. Chips to drawer edges. Replaced drawer blocks. Drawer base rebuilt. Minor separation in drawers. Hairline cracks present in drawer faces and on sides of the case (see image #7 and image #8). There is traces of red paint splatter on the front leg of one commode. Some yellowing of painted finish.
