English, 20th century. Matched pair of George II style carved mahogany open armchairs, after the original designed by Giles Grendey (English, 1693–1780), each with a foliate detailed crest rail above a reticulated stylized shell form splat flanked by conforming stiles and outset arm with acanthus carved scrolled hands, on a blue leather covered trapezoidal seat having decorative nailhead trim and raised on front cabriole legs with acanthus hips ending in front claw and ball feet. Approximate height 40.25", width 27" (scrolled hand to hand), seat depth 17", seat height 17.5".
Light wear to each chair's finish particularly visible on arms and back. Scattered small losses and some retouches to arms, carved knees and feet commensurate with age and use. Each chair with slight separation seam where back meets arm, peg on back for joint protruding slightly, remnants of adhesive and finish visible under black light examination, not particularly distracting. One chair back right edge with minor hairline fracture (structurally sound). Seats of each with scattered losses and surface scratches, would likely benefit from reupholstering. Each chair structurally sound. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
