French, likely 19th or early 20th century. A pair of Louis XVI style gilt easy chairs, each with an arched crest decorated with carved gilt trim, central relief carved roses, and relief carved bellflowers, the forward projecting wings, back, sides, padded armrests, seat, and seat cushion upholstered in conforming cream silk fabric with fine piping, the arms terminating in acanthus carved scrolled handrails on molded supports, the seat rail decorated with carved trim conforming to crest and sides, all raised on cylindrical stop-fluted legs headed by paterae. Approximate height 40.5", width 27", depth 23".
One chair with losses to gilding at corners of crest where meets ears, losses to gilding and wood on interior side of left handrest, slight losses to gilding and wood at acanthus leaves over paterae, slight losses to gilding and surface scratches to frame on back, and feet with light wear commensurate with age and use. The other chair with slight loss to gilding at inner far left corner of crest beneath finial (not particularly visible), surface scratches and gilt loss on back of chair, minor wear to feet commensurate with age and use. Upholstery in good condition with no rips, tears, holes or visible staining. No other apparent damage, loss or repair.
