English, 19th century. A matched pair of English Renaissance Revival style oak hall chairs, both with cartouche shaped back centered with applied shield; one painted with three crowns centering an open book 'Dominus illuminatio mea' , the motto of the University of Oxford, the other painted shield with heraldic crest for the University of Cambridge, both with serpentine shaped seat having rounded projecting corners over front turned and carved legs. Approximate height 36.5", width 18", seat depth 16.12", seat height 17".
Both chairs are structurally sound and overall good condition. Visible separations from shrinkage. Prior worming on feet. One foot with minor wood loss; is not structural. One chair with four missing blocks under seat. The other chair with one missing block.
