Chinese (likely Sijangui), late 19th or early 20th century. A pair of tall black and red lacquered cabinets with lift off compound cabinets to be placed atop tall cabinets for or extra storage, the tall cabinets with black lacquered top and sides and two red doors with gold leaf painted decoration in scenes of Chinese mountain landscapes with traditional Chinese buildings, rocks, trees, and figures cabinet with figures playing music, reposing and at play, the other cabinet with similar landscape and buildings, and figures, each with round bronze backplate and lock split at the opening, each case interior comprising a black lacquered scalloped cornice surmounting two large scalloped shelves and generous storage space, over a gold leaf painted frieze with dragon, boat, and phoenix motifs, surmounted by a red painted apron with openwork brackets, raised on squared front and back feet, the conforming compound cabinets with black lacquered top and sides and two red doors with gold leaf painted decoration in scenes of Chinese mountain landscapes with traditional Chinese buildings, one cabinet with figures playing music, reposing and at play, the other cabinet with similar landscape and buildings, and figures on horseback, reposing, and at play joined by a dragon, each with bronze backplate and lock, opening to the interior comprising a black lacquered scalloped cornice with open storage space, each resting on a double plinth base with red painted panels on the top section and gilt painted motifs on the lower section. Overall approximate height of cabinets 104", width 44.5", depth 20.25".
