Chinese, late 19th/ early 20th century. A pair of large porcelain lidded urns with underglaze blue painted motif bearing four double happiness symbols to body and lid surrounded by peony blossoms on meandering sweet pea vines, the lid rim and body shoulder each with a band of leiwen meandering key, and the lid with a flat round finial. One with a red wax export seal to shoulder over a paper tag, but otherwise unmarked. Overall approximately 17", diameter 10.5".
Both with dirt, residue and grime throughout; particularly clinging to minor surface abrasions and under-glaze pitting. (1) Vase I: Lid with untreated, radial losses and surface abrasions to finial. Lid with scattered discolorations to glaze. Lid with under-glaze pitting. Lid with untreated, radial losses to rim; more prevalent from underside. Underside of lid with additional wear. Body with scattered pitting under glaze and brown-hued discolorations. Radial wear to rim and foot. Underside of foot with wear commensurate with use. Under-glaze pitting to bottom. (2) Vase II: Lid with visible, untreated radial losses and surface abrasions to finial. Lid with scattered discolorations to glaze. Lid with under-glaze pitting, including one large glazing imperfection. Lid with visible, untreated, radial losses to rim. Underside of lid with wear and additional chip. Body with scattered pitting under glaze and brown-hued discolorations. Radial wear to rim and foot. Underside of foot with wear commensurate with use and scattered losses, structurally stable. Under-glaze pitting to bottom.
