Chinese, Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Pair of cast iron figural sculptures dated 1524 (3rd year of the reign of Chia-ching) created at T'ien-ning-ssu monastery in Peking likely to adorned the building. Figures depicting to seated men in long robes with bald heads, elongated earlobes and calm facial expressions. Figures may be lohans, almsgivers, monks, or patrons of the Buddhist faith. One figure holding rectangular box at center in covered hands, the other without any precious objects. Inscriptions on both on back side, both raised on three primitive rectangular tabbed feet. Approximate height of figure with box 31.75", width 16.5", depth 14". Other figure height 32.5", width 17.25", depth 12.75". Accompanied with copy of March 10th, 1953 letter addressed to Mr. J.H. Elliott, Atlanta, Georgia from University Museum, University of Pennsylvania stating that the items are from the Ming Dynasty period. Approximate height, width, depth.
