A almost matching pair of Baroque style walnut hall chairs in Sgabello form ornately carved with tapering pierced back surmounted by an arched rayed crest centering a grotesque mask or 'mask of an ancient'; one mask with open mouth and protruding tongue, the other with open mouth, above a foliate frieze supported by two caryatids enclosing a foliate pierced and imbricated splat over a rectangular shaped seat paneled with stipple and foliage and centered with sunken circular panel with initials MDCH, with egg and dart carved rail on seated satyr supports centered with cabochon. Approximate height of one chair 45", the other chair 45.4", width 20", seat depth 14.25", seat height 18.25".
Overall good condition. Both chairs with loose backs. One chair with chips and loss to arched crest and cracks with splits to splat. Traces of glue residue to underside of both seats. Pad to the feet are later with repairs.
