American, Late 19th century (circa 1870s-1880s). A pair of intricately carved walnut side chairs in the American Aesthetic style, the backs decorated with flower, vine, and scroll carving with central carved cabochon flanked by a pattern of scrolls, over the needlepoint seat with flower bouquet motif in shades of gold, rose, red-violet, and green on slate blue ground, over the base with front vine carved arches over turned front legs and raking back legs. Approximate height 35", width 18", depth 18", seat to floor 18.5".
Chairs in overall good condition with all carved elements intact. One chair exhibits a slight split near bottom of stay rail, and two repairs each under the corner arch of seat rails.
