Crispijn de Passe IIn (Dutch, 1597-1670). A pair of engravings from "L’Instruction du Roy en L’Exercise de Monter a Cheval" by Antoine de Pluvinel, dressage instructor to the young King Louis XIV, published in the 17th century, comprising of Figure 36 (3 Part) and Figure 34 (3 Part: a droicte). Figure 36 depicting the King on horseback wearing ornate period apparel, the horse performing Capriole, with male figures to the front and back of the horse, the scene set before a vast palatial garden landscape, inscribed within plate lower center "Figur. 36 3 Part", lower right "M. de Plu:", and in pencil lower left margin "M. la Ma. de Sou". Figure 34 depicting the young King on horseback, the horse performing Capriole while tethered to a pole within a riding ring with a second figure holding the tether secure beside the post and a dog looking on from the right, an inset scene to right with another Capriole scene within a riding ring with many onlookers, inscribed lower right "Figur. 34 3 Part: a droicte" and within inset "A gauche." Each framed approximately 15" x 19", sight size approximately 8.5" x 12".
Both engravings examined out of the frame. Each work mounted to mat board with hinging tape at top--not laid down. Light toning to each sheet. Each sheet with scattered foxing, predominately in lower register under mat. Impression rich without signs of fading. Light creasing and wear from light handling. Corners rounded from handling. No signs of rips, tears, holes, or losses.
