American, circa 1856. Original photograph of Abraham Lincoln, apparently untouched and before the Lincoln-Douglass debates . The photograph is attributed to R. Hodgman, photographer over Deland & Burr's Store, Princeton, Illinois. Photograph is presented between Carte de Visite Photograph of Abraham Lincoln and R. Hodgman. Presented along with a copy of the newspaper article from The New York Herald Saturday, April 15, 1865 detailing the Assassination of President Lincoln. Frame size height 6", width 8". Sight of photograph height 3". Provenance: From the Collection of historian Arthur E. Chapman, Woodstock, Georgia. According to Mr. Chapman, his stepfather, Dr. D. Munger Hodgman from Princeton, Ill always told him that the photograph of Lincoln was an original taken by his grandfather who was a camera artist in Princeton. According to him, R. Hodgman was associated with Lincoln and had some business with him and one day took this photo at his studio. The Hodgman family was very well known and established in that community.
