Continental School, first half 19th century. "Portrait of a Lady", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Ovular formatted painting depicting a young woman at bust length with curled brown hair affixed atop her head and framing face, with large blue eyes over strong nose and small pink lips, her porcelain neck and chest framed by a white ruffled shirt and robin's egg blue dress, the woman wrapped in a brown or purple shawl and set before a solid dark background. Framed approximately 37.5" x 32.25", unframed approximately 30" x 25".
Scattered cracking, regilding and warping to oval frame. Under black light examination, greenish hue throughout from older varnish coat. Painting with two punctures or tears that need repair including on woman's left breast and on chin. Cracquelure throughout, however paint layer appears to be stable. Significant bubbling to paint layer in arch-shaped form surrounding woman's head--bubbling visible and raised. Oxidation to back of canvas and stretcher commensurate with age.
