Netherlandish, early 16th century. A carved oak figural group sculpture depicting the young Virgin Mary wedding the elderly Joseph with the High Priest Zacharias behind the couple holding their hands together and gesturing a blessing, the trio accompanied by the bride's parents, Anna and Joachim, as well as several rejected suitors and/or elders, altogether to an integrally carved base. Approximate height 22.75, width 18.75", depth 4.25". Provenance: By descent from Mr. Valentin Weisbach (German/ American, 1843-1899) whereby gifted by Professor Gunnar Dybwad (German/ American, 1909-2001) to a New England Institution and then sold at Christie's, New York, March 30, 1999 as lot 32, whereby acquired by a private California collector and sold at Christie's, New York, May 18, 2005 as lot 472, whereby acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
