Likely Michele Grandville (Italian, 1821-1893), late19th century. Museum quality ladies jewelry box executed with fine inlay of exotic woods and penworked detailing, the rectangular stepped lid decorated to each side with opposing griffins centering a scene with two putti and an oxen with a border of tessellated micro mosaic banding, the lid with Bacchus style mask to the central hinged front opening to the interior lid decorated with opposing griffins in green penwork centering an oval beveled mirror, the two hinged compartments with ivory tufted lining that swing to the side exposing the bottom compartment also lined in matching fabric, the interior and hinged compartments decorated with perching birds on drapery swags tessellated micro mosaics, Vitruvian scrollwork and Tunbridge style banding. Approximate height 5.37", width 12.25", depth 6.37". Note: Michele de Grandville was one of the top marquetry furniture and decorative arts makers from Sorrento Italy in the 1800s.
Scattered losses and lifting to veneer on lid. Small wood losses to corners. Lower edge of box with large loss to veneer at left corner, loss near center and loss at right corner, additional nicks and chips in wood on lower edge. Some smaller veneer losses throughout form (majority of losses on lid). Under black light examination, no other signs of damage, loss or repair.
