Ben Smith (American (Atlanta, Georgia), 20th century). "Seated Figure with Boal" - 1977, monumental woodcut embellished, edition 1/15, pencil signed and dated lower center. First run woodcut depicting a seated male figure with exposed head and neck completely covered in tribal tattoos, the man depicted at full length wearing a bright yellow shroud or wrap decorated in white with circular patterning, in his lap a flared rim bowl clutched by a tattooed hand that also holds a staff topped with feathers, his scaly foot protruding below the shroud, and the background finished with matte brown and black fields of color over a field of cream embellished to lower right with archaic lettering between two bands of brown coloring over the letters M and X. Framed approximately 73.375" x 56.125", unframed approximately 72" x 55".
Work on canvas and not protected under glass. No signs of rips, tears or holes. Under black light examination, no areas of repair or in-painting. Light cracking to thicker impasto areas however media stable with no signs of lifting.
