- Lot Description
Henry Bursztynowicz (American (Pennsylvania), 1922-2001). "Wings", carved and assembled travertine marble, signed to plinth "Henry B.". Abstract sculpture crafted of bent, carved, and assembled marble, the form resembling a winged angel in three dimensions with wings spread to side and extending up above the figure's head, the right wing extending out toward viewer at bottom and resembling a waterfall, the body of the figure created with shadow play made by the folding back of the stone at interior of wings. The sculpture to a green marble rectangular plinth. Note: Bursztynowicz was a local Pennsylvania sculptor around the height of the abstract expressionist movement and the pop art movement. Bursztynowicz received his education from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and Instituto d’Arte, Florence, Italy. He was a faculty member at the University of Missouri and he taught at Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center (now Pittsburgh Center for the Arts). Pittsburgh Center for the Arts honored Henry Bursztynowicz with a retrospective of his works in 2009.
