"Le Soldat du Chene, An Osage Chief.", hand colored lithograph, published by F. W. Greenough, Philadelphia in 1838 as part of McKenney & Hall’s "History of the Indian Tribes", drawn, printed, and colored at I. T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment, No. 94 Walnut St. Lithograph depicts the great Native American chief, Le Soldat du Chene (early 19th century), chief of the Osage Indians, in profile view at bust length with long black hair braided down his back and a small red mohawk to back of his scalp, with decoration to top and lob of his pierced and elongated ears, the subject wearing a black fur collar over a natural colored garment. Framed approximately 28" x 23", sight size approximately 15.25" x 10", sheet size approximately 20.125" x 13.75".
Print connected at top with hinging tape--work is not laid down. Work appears to have been cut down on the left side (slightly jagged). Light handling wear to sheet. Pencil marks in lower corner and lower register. Colors rich and not fading.
