French, c. early 20th century. A massive French walnut armoire in the style of the Louis Philippe era (1773-1850), the heavy molded projecting cornice over a coved frieze surmounting the case, the molded sides decorated with applied carved decoration comprising Rococo c-scroll and acanthus forms and central strapwork with convex oval medallions, the case facade comprising two large astragal molded doors with central applied acanthus leaf decoration and round molded wooden keyhole escutcheons, opening to interior with scalloped top shelf surmounting a large open storage compartment to the left and shelf space as well as a single drawer to the right, all surmounting two lower drawers separated by a partition each with keyholes above a base molding over a cyma-curved apron with molded c and s-scrolls and central applied fleur de lis, raised on squared feet. Approximate height 98.75", width (at top) 71", width (at bottom) 62", depth 21.25".
Structurally sound. Scattered knicks and scratches to finish, commensurate with age and usage. Areas of repair to veneer on cornice. Both doors with veneer loss and some lifting to veneer. Arched molding on left door is loose. Right door with warping to finish at top. Probable repair & patch to left door lower edge and also repair to interior left door. Approximately 2.5 inches of door beading missing at top center. Wood loss to chamfered lower left corner. Missing escutcheon on right lower drawer. Probable repair to scrolled apron to the right of fleur de lis. Latch on door for locking mechanism is missing. No key present.
