Manner of John Sell Cotman (British, 1782-1842), "Stroll by the River", oil on canvas, unsigned, verso of stretcher with remnant of handwritten label. 19th century English landscape painting with figures depicting small village beside a serpentine river, houses and shops line street with green bushy trees, figures walking up and down cobblestone lined road. Framed approximately 23" x 32". Unframed 19" x 28.25".
Painting has been relined. Craquelure visible throughout, however, paint layer appears to be stable. One small area at left with small loss from abrasion. Under black light examination, light in-painting in tree. Greenish hue from earlier varnish coat. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
