Maison Vervelle Audot Successeur (Paris, founded 1804), second half 19th century. A fine Napoleon III gilt bronze mounted table, jewelry or dresser box in ebony or rosewood, the shaped casket top mounted with gilt bronze floral swags and inset with birds eye maple cartouche opening to a void interior, the locking mechanism engraved "E. Tristan" or "E. Cristan". Box raised on a four gilt bronze foliate scrolled supports united by gilt beading. Underside of box with faint manufacturers mark in oval, mostly illegible "Vervelle Audot/rue Montmercy Feydeau". Approximate height 4.25", width 11", depth 8". Note: The firm of Maison Vervelle was established in 1804 by Jean-Francois Vervelle who exhibited at the 1827 and 1844 Expositions and also at the 1855 Paris Exposition Universelle. Henry Audot took over the company in 1856 and by 1866 it was known as H. Audot, Dallongeville, working at 1 rue Neuve-Montmorency in Paris. The firm was renowned for making small luxury items and d'ebenisterie de goût et de fantasie. Literature: D.
