French, 19th century. French Louis XVI style gray paint decorated fauteuil or open armchair, the rectangular back surmounted with carved flowerheads over a padded and upholstered back and foliate and scroll carved arms with padded elbow rests and padded seat, all with blue patchwork upholstery and decorative nailhead trim and raised on turned, tapered and fluted legs headed with patera blocks. The frame carved with ribbon twist. Height 38.75", width 22" (arm to arm), seat depth 19", seat height 15".
Structurally sound. Stile has been repaired and strengthened at downswept arm & seatrail (two exposed nailheads). Repair also joining lower stile to seatrail, probably to strengthen structure (see image 8). Scattered nicks & chips, commensurate with age. Wear to gray painted finish. Fabric is in excellent condition & all decorative nailhead mounts are intact.
