Japy Freres & Cie (French, founded 1771-1970), circa 1844-1849. Fine Louis XVI style gilt bronze figural mantle clock, the circular white enamel dial with blue Roman hour chapters and Arabic minute numbers, enclosing gilt bronze hour and minute hands above twin key escapements behind a glazed hinged beaded bezel draped with floral garland swag within a fluted truncated column flanked by scrolling brackets surmounted by a seated Bacchanal putto or cherub clutching grapes while being harassed by a goat on a naturalistic modeled rocky craig all resting on a shaped plinth with rosette cast border raised on three toupie feet. Clock is accompanied with custom velvet covered oval stand. The dial with traces of a signature. The movement and pendulum both numbered #1715. The movement also stamped "LS Japy Fils, Médaille d'argent, 1844-1848". Approximate height 12.5", width 9.37", depth 4.75". Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Owner of Chelsea House. Note: About 1844 to 1849 period, some clocks, such as this, are signed Ls Japy Fils. These were made by Louis Japy who was awarded the Silver Medal in 1849.
