French or Italian, late 19th century. Louis XV style walnut inlaid bombe commode with serpentine molded marble top above conforming case with two short over two long drawers, each Inlaid with cartouche shaped bandings, decorated with shading and c-scrolls enhanced with gilt bronze escutcheons and figural pulls over an ormolu rocaille mounted shaped apron, the sides similarly decorated and the angles mounted with cast ormolu raised on foliate cast scrolled toes. Approximate height 33.5", width 49.5", depth 23.75".
Marble top with scattered small surface scratches commensurate with age and light use. Exterior of case with scattered retouches throughout from losses to veneer. Bottom drawer with swelling (tight to open and close). Left side of case with three long vertical splits. Left side of front of case with split running vertically. Losses to edges of legs. Oxidation to mounts. Upper left drawer with horizontal split running nearly length of hardware pull. Additional splits to case throughout, however, chest appears to be structurally sound and stable.
