Flemish, 17th century. Large, vertically-aligned, highly detailed, hand woven vedure garden tapestry in blue, green, yellow and red with a number of animals including a spotted giraffe, undulating snake or serpent with protruding forked tongue, a deer, a monkey latched to base of a tree trunk, a rhino, and other woodland creatures in lush garden or forest setting with trees, plants, flowers and grasses, winding small stream or creek receding into background with figure on foot bridge, figures in long architectural arcade of palace at back center, two animals play fight at back left, scene flanked by tall trees bearing fruit and housing birds, view of village kingdom at top amid rolling hills and landscape depicting buildings with sloped red roofs under calm sky. Apparently unsigned. Work contained within dark blue borders. Overall approximately 142.75" x 96". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
Little to no visible moth damage. Scattered restoration work throughout form typically in small sections of thread work intended to join or support textile--approximately 10% overall. Most visible restorations in upper left section. Scattered areas throughout in need of restoration--mostly in horizontal tears or separations (approximately 20-30 overall). Tapestry with later surround and back, currently with nail holes to newer surround (installed as such at Cobb home), top edge with wooden beam for mounting. Slight fading of colors, commensurate with age and minor light exposure. Colors well-represented in images--tapestry in yellow and green tones throughout. No other overt damage, losses or repairs.
