Chinese, late 19th/ early 20th century. A large, finely carved sensor or incense burner in three parts, the lowest piece being on tripartate ball and claw feet surmounted by open mouthed masks from which the legs extend, the wide panels of body with figural high relief decoration depicting dragons surrounded by vines, the mouth of the section with bands of leaf tip and meandering key, with two arms or handles flaring from masks with rings in the mouth at the narrow end of each side of base, these handles with carved scroll and key decoration, the interior of basin with carved dragon motif, marked to underside with carved calligraphic marks within a rectangular cartouche. The central section of censer of cylindrical pagoda form with six Buddhist Immortals carved in high relief on tondo within rectangular vignettes behind a reticulated fence with ball finials, marked to underside with carved calligraphic marks within a rectangular cartouche. The topmost section of censor of pagoda roof form with three tiers of scalloped rooflines around carved brick hexagonal structures, with bells from roofline, topped by double gourd finial with swirling dragon motif. Overall approximately 32.25" x 23.5" x 5".
The base is missing some relief carved decoration to the center panel on one side. The central section is missing a finial to the fence (see image #8). There are a total of 4 bells missing (see image #7 and #8). On the third tier, the tip of finial is broken off and there is a missing screw. There are some minor age splits throughout, not distracting or compromising to the structure.
