Norwegian, circa 1828. A large carved and painted wood ceremonial twin handled drinking bowl, kasa or ale bowl, dug out and carved from one solid piece of wood, the handles modeled as horse heads rising up from shield shaped panel, inscribed around the rim, dated 1828 and initialed M. W. The interior of bowl with single painted profile of a fish. Approximate height 8.75", width 16.25" (head to head), depth 9.12". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
Overall with minor paint loss commensurate with age and use. One horse head with small structure loss to ear, each horse head bearing more extreme paint loss than body due to general handling. Exterior of bowl allover with scratches and abrasions, some through the paint. Interior with chips of paint loss to fish figure, as well as general losses to finish.
